From Aramaic מַסגְדָא (masgəḏā), a noun of place from the verb ܣܵܓ݂ܹܕ݂ (sāḡēḏ, “to prostrate, worship”). The sense of “mosque” is a semantic loan from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid) of which itself borrowed from Aramaic; compare Hebrew מִסְגָּד (misgád).
