Inherited from Aramaic מַּערְבָא (maʿrəḇā), place noun derived from the same root as עֲרָבָא (ʿărāḇā, “sunset”) meaning “place of sunsetting”; compare Arabic غَرْب (ḡarb) and Hebrew מַעֲרָב (ma'aráv).
