Etymology

Literally, “peace be upon you”; compare the same in Arabic اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ (as-salāmu ʕalayka), Hebrew שָׁלוֹם עָלֶיךָ (shalóm alékha), and Classical Syriac ܫܵܠܡ ܠܵܟ݂.

This term is used when said to a single male.
For some speakers, this term is fairly formal, in everyday speech often replaced with the shorter ܫܠܵܡܵܐ (šlāmā).
The typical response is ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ (bšaynā, literally “in peace”) or ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ ܓܲܘܘܼܟ݂ (bšaynā gawōḵ, literally “in peace among you”)
