Inherited from Aramaic [Term?], calque of Akkadian 𒈬𒅎𒈠 (šaddaqdam), from 𒈬 (šattum, “year”) + 𒂵𒀜𒈬𒌝 (qadmum, “early, before”) and ܫܲܢ݇ܬܵܐ (šattā) and ܩ ܕ ܡ (q d m). Compare Classical Syriac ܐܫܬܩܕ (ʾeštəqaḏ, ʾeštəqady), Turoyo ܐܷܫܩܱܕ݂ (ëšqäḏ), and Hebrew אֶשְׁתָּקַד (ʾeštāqaḏ).
