Uncertain, possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-Iranian *(H)ádʰi, derived (by conflation with Proto-Indo-European *éti (“over, across”), whence *(H)áti) from Proto-Indo-European *(H)n̥dʰí (“under, below”). Compare Tocharian B ette (“lower, down”).
