Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hānušákš (one by one), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁onu-sékʷ-s, from *h₁énu (after) + *sekʷ- (to follow). Compare अनु (anu) and सच् (sac). Cognate with Avestan 𐬁𐬥𐬎𐬱𐬵𐬀𐬑𐬱 (ānušhaxš, one after the other).

      tváṃ hí mā́nuṣe jáné ʼgne súprīta idhyáse.
      srúcas tvā yanty ānuṣák sújāta sárpirāsute.
      For, Agni, kindled amongst people, you are well-pleased.
      Ladles (full of clarified butter) come to you one after the other, O highborn one, O eater of clarified butter.
