Pronunciation

Etymology 1

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *kú. Compare Avestan 𐬐𐬏 (), Albanian ku (where?), and Latin ubi. Related to किम् (kim, what?).

Monier-Williams theorizes that this was originally an interjectional interrogative word signifying "how (strange)!", which described an oddity or deficiency in something. See the prefix कु- (ku-) for more.
