Inherited from Prakrit *𑀕𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*gŏṭṭa, “something round”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-).
The sense "profit" probably derives from the many idiomatic expressions involving the word, e.g. गोटी मारना (goṭī mārnā, “to succeed in a plan”, literally “to capture a piece”).
