From a derivative of Ashokan Prakrit *𑀖𑀝𑁆𑀝𑀢𑀺 (*ghaṭṭati, “to decrease”), whence घटना (ghaṭnā). Compare Sanskrit घट्टयति (ghaṭṭayati, “to speak ill of, slander”).
