Etymology

From Prakrit *𑀘𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*cŏṭṭa, “thief”), borrowed from Dravidian. Compare Tamil சொட்டு (coṭṭu, “to knock on the head; to cheat; to snatch away”), சுற்று (cuṟṟu, “to move around in an orbit; to get by trickery; to steal away”).^[1]

Alternatively, from चोर (cor, “thief”) +‎ -टा (-ṭā, pleonastic suffix), from Sanskrit चोर (cora), चौर (caura), also possibly borrowed from Dravidian.^[2] Compare alternative form चोरटा (corṭā).
