Borrowed from Punjabi ਛੱਤ (chatta), ultimately from Sanskrit *छत्ति (*chatti), from छद् (chad, to cover) +‎ -ति (-ti). Displaced native Old Hindi छात (chāta), from the same Sanskrit source.
