Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *śćad-, related to Prasuni vëzëlë (goatskin boot, shoe) (< *upascāda), with further origin uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃- (darkness); compare English shade and shadow. Compare also Old English hæteru (clothing).
