From Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (to pull together, coagulate, solidify, compact). Cognate with Persian تنجیدن (tanjidan, to squeeze, twist), Old Armenian թանձր (tʻanjr, thick, dense), English tight, Old Norse þéttr (close, thick), Old Irish técht (solidified), Lithuanian tánkus (thick, dense).
