Etymology
The origin is uncertain.
Perhaps borrowed from Dravidian; compare Tamil தட்டு (taṭṭu, “to knock, tap”), Malayalam തട്ടുക (taṭṭuka, “to tap”).
Derivations from Indo-European roots, including तृद् (tṛd, “to split open, destroy”) and तृह् (tṛh, “to crush, bruise”) are less likely.
