Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

Perhaps borrowed from Dravidian; compare Tamil தட்டு (taṭṭu, to knock, tap), Malayalam തട്ടുക (taṭṭuka, to tap).

Derivations from Indo-European roots, including तृद् (tṛd, to split open, destroy) and तृह् (tṛh, to crush, bruise) are less likely.
