Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *telh₂- (to bear, undergo, endure).

Cognate with Ancient Greek τᾰ́λαντον (tắlanton, balance, scale) whence English talent, Latin tolerō (bear, endure) whence English tolerate. Further possible cognates include Ancient Greek Ἄτλας (Átlas, the 'bearer' of heaven) and therefore Ἀτλαντίς (Atlantís).
