Pronunciation

Noun

तेजस् • (téjas) stemn

  1. the sharp edge of a knife
    • c. 1500 BCE – 1000 BCE, Ṛgveda 1.55.1:
diváścidasya varimā́ ví papratha índraṃ ná mahnā́ pṛthivī́ caná práti.
bhīmástúviṣmāñcarṣaṇíbhya ātapáḥ śíśīte vájraṃ téjase ná váṃsagaḥ.
The amplitude of Indra was vaster than the space of heaven; earth was not comparable to him in bulk; formidable and most mighty, he has been ever the afflicter of the enemies of those men who worship him; he has his thunderbolt for sharpness, as a bull his horns.
  2. the point or top of a flame or a ray
  3. light, brilliance, glow, glare
  4. splendor
  5. fiery energy, vital power
