Derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀞𑀸𑀡 (ṭhāṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, place, station), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (to stand).

Doublet of स्थान (sthān), a tatsama, and of -स्तान (-stān), a Persian loanword.
