Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *dʰebʰ- (to harm, deceive). Cognate with Persian فریفتن (fariftan, to deceive), Old Armenian դաւ (daw, deceit, conspiracy) (an Iranian borrowing), Hittite [script needed] (tepnu-, to decrease, to humble), and perhaps Ancient Greek ἀτέμβω (atémbō, to maltreat; to be bereft of).
