Etymology

Derived from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀨𑁂𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*phekk), perhaps metathesised from Sanskrit क्षिप् (kṣip, to throw). Compare Hindi फेंकना (phẽknā).

  1. (transitive) to throw
    माझ्यावर पाणी फेकू नकोस!
    mājhyāvar pāṇī phekū nakos!
    Don't throw water on me!
  2. (figuratively, intransitive) to bluff, to brag; to talk loudly in praise of oneself
    फेकणे त्याच्या स्वभावात ठासून बसले आहे.
    phekṇe tyācyā svabhāvāt ṭhāsūn basle āhe.
    The tendency to brag is ingrained in his personality.
  3. (figuratively, intransitive) to lie
    फेकू नकोस; जे काही सत्य असेल ते स्पष्टपणे सांगून टाक!
    phekū nakos; je kāhī satya asel te spaṣṭapṇe sāṅgūn ṭāk!
    Don't lie; whatever is the truth, tell us clearly!
