Inherited from Prakrit *बुहुक्खव ~ *बुहुक्खअ (buhukkhava ~ buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (*bubhukṣaka, desiring to eat), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, to desire to eat) + -अक (-aka, doer). Cognate with Hindi भूखा (bhūkhā).
