Inherited from Prakrit *बुहुक्खअ (buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (*bubhukṣaka, “desiring to eat”), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, “to desire to eat”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). By surface analysis, भूख (bhūkh) + -आ (-ā).
Cognate with Braj भूखौ (bhūkhau).
