Etymology
Inherited from Prakrit *𑀩𑀼𑀳𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀅 (*buhukkhaa), from Sanskrit *बुभुक्षक (*bubhukṣaka, “desiring to eat”), a back-formation from बुभुक्षति (bubhukṣati, “to desire to eat”) + -अक (-aka, “doer”). By surface analysis, بُھوک (bhūk, “hunger”) + ـا (-ā).
Cognate with Braj भूखौ (bhūkhau).
