Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *mitHás, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *meyth₂- (to exchange; mutual, reciprocal). Cognate with Younger Avestan 𐬨𐬌𐬚𐬋 (miθō) and more distantly related to Latin mittō (to send), Gothic 𐌹𐌽𐌼𐌰𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (inmaidjan, to change) and possibly also Latin mūtuus (mutual) and its English borrowing mutual. The Sanskrit root is मिथ् (mith).
