Etymology
Of Indo-Iranian origin. The verbal forms are not attested in Vedic Sanskrit. Compare रहस् (rahas, “secret”) with Classical Persian رَاز (rāz, “secret”).
Mayrhofer tentatively derived the root from Proto-Indo-European *legʰ- (“to lay”) originally, but later doubts this derivation. Whitney compares this root with रंह् (raṃh, “to hasten”), from which रहस् (rahas, “speed”) is derived.
