Etymology

Of Indo-Iranian origin. The verbal forms are not attested in Vedic Sanskrit. Compare रहस् (rahas, secret) with Classical Persian رَاز (rāz, secret).

Mayrhofer tentatively derived the root from Proto-Indo-European *legʰ- (to lay) originally, but later doubts this derivation. Whitney compares this root with रंह् (raṃh, to hasten), from which रहस् (rahas, speed) is derived.

Pronunciation

Root
