Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hranźʰ-, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hranǰʰ-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lengʷʰ-. See also लङ्घ् (laṅgh). Whitney considers this root related to रह् (rah, to leave) and tentatively assigns रहस् (rahas, loneliness, speed) and ऋहत् (ṛhat, weak) under this root.
