Inherited from Sanskrit रिष् (ríṣ, “injury, harm”), from the root रिष् (riṣ, “to be hurt, receive harm; to hurt, injure”), with contamination from ईर्ष्या (īrṣyā, “envy; malice; jealousy”). Cognate with Kashmiri ऋ॑ह् (ṛ॑h, “burning heat”), Kumaoni रिस (“anger”), Nepali रिस (ris, “anger”), Bengali রিষ (riś, “jealousy”), Odia ରୀସ (risa, “anger, envy”), Gujarati રીસ (rīs, “anger”) and Marathi रीस (rīs, “anger”).
