Inherited from Old Hindi लोहू (lohū), from Prakrit 𑀮𑁄𑀳𑀺𑀅 (lohia) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀉𑀓- (-uka-), from Sanskrit लोहित (lohita), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas (“red”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (“red”). Doublet of रोहू (rohū) < Sanskrit रोहित (rohita), from same Proto-Indo-European root. Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red, Bengali রুই (rui), Assamese ৰৌ (rou), Punjabi ਲਹੂ (lahū), Kalasha ḷúi, Khowar لیے (ley).
