Etymology
The origin is uncertain. Often thought to be borrowed from Dravidian. However, Burrow prefers to connect this to Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (“to hide”), via an intermediate form *शाल्त् (*śālt). Compare Persian شال (šâl).
