From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰatás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ǰʰatás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰn̥-tó-s, from *gʷʰen- (to kill). Cognate with Avestan 𐬘𐬀𐬙𐬋 (jatō), Old Persian 𐎩𐎫 (jatáʰ), Ancient Greek φατός (phatós).
