Etymology
Etymology tree
Sanskrit हाटक (hāṭaka)
Uncertain.
- Mayrhofer in KEWA, drawing on Joshi, derived from the name of the country, which is presumably of substrate origin.[1][2]
- Per proponents of Fortunatov's law, and (begrudgingly?) noted by Mayrhofer in EWAia, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃-to- + -क (-ka).[3][4] Thus, a doublet of हिर॑ण्य (híraṇya).
- Kuiper claims borrowing from Munda while discussing कनक (kanaka, “gold”) but this is wholly unsubstantiated.[5]
Also note the root हट् (haṭ, “to shine”).
