ਅਰਮਾਨ

Punjabi

Etymology

Borrowed from Persian آرمان (ârmân, desire, ideal), which itself was likely borrowed from Sogdian r’’mn (to move/raise).[1] The first syllable is likely from Proto-Indo-European *h₁er-. The second syllable is likely either from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁nom, from *meh₁- (to measure) or from Proto-Indo-European *-mh₁nos.; Cognate with Tajik Ормон (Ormon, male given name).
