Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀞𑀸𑀡 (ṭhāṇa), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna, “place, station”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (“to stand”). Doublet of સ્થાન (sthān). Cognate with Sindhi ٺاڻ / ठाणु (ṭhāṇu).
