Probably inherited from Prakrit 𑀭𑀁𑀕 (raṃga, “theatre, dancing place”) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-lla-) + -𑀓- (-ka-), from Sanskrit રઙ્ગ (raṅga, “dancing; stage”) (whence also રંગ (raṅg, “colour”)), from the root રઞ્જ્ (rañj, “to be dyed or coloured; to be pleased or delighted”). Compare New Sanskrit रङ्गल (raṅgala).
