Cognate with Proto-Iranian *ra(n)ǰ- (to colour, dye), whence Persian رخش (raxš, red), Khwarezmian rxtk (raxtak, red), Mazanderani رش (raš, red (of cattle)), Northern Kurdish reş (black) and Sogdian [script needed] (rɣš- /⁠raxš⁠/, Rakhsh), as well as Ancient Greek ῥέζω (rhézō, I dye, paint).
