Derived from Sanskrit अक्ष (akṣa, “axle”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Háćšas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éḱs-os. Doublet of అక్షము (akṣamu). Compare Tamil அச்சு (accu), Latin axis, Ancient Greek ἄξων (áxōn), English axle.
