From Old Khmer ទ្រង៑ (draṅ), ទ្រោង៑ (droṅ), ទ្រង (draṅa), ទ្រូង (drūṅa, “to bear, to carry, to hold, to support; to have, to possess; etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer ទ្រង់ (trŭəng); Lao ຊົງ (song).
