Etymology 1

From Proto-Tai *C̥.baːᴮ (shoulder).[1]

In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᨷ᩵ᩤ, Lao ບ່າ (), ᦢᦱᧈ (ḃaa¹), Shan မႃႇ (màa) or ဝႃႇ (wàa), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥱ (mǎa), Tai Dam ꪚ꪿ꪱ, Ahom 𑜈𑜡 ().

In Central Tai, cognate with Tày , Nong Zhuang mbaq as in lungzmbaq.[2]

In Northern Tai, cognate with Zhuang mbaq.

In other Tai, cognate with mbaq (Ningming, Longzhou dialects),[2] mbaq as in geuqmbaq,[2] mbah (Daxin dialect).[2]

Possibly cognate with Proto-Austronesian *qabaʀa (shoulder).[3]
