สนอง

From Old Khmer ស្នោង (snoṅa), ស្នង (snaṅa), ស្នង៑ (snaṅ), ស្នោង៑ (snoṅ, “exchange; reimbursement; repayment; replacement; representation; substitution; etc”); extended forms of សង (saṅa), សោង៑ (soṅ), សង៑ (saṅ, “to give back; to pay back; to replace; to return; to substitute; etc”).

Further extended as សំនោង៑ (saṃnoṅ), សំនង៑ (saṃnaṅ, “compensation; reimbursement; repayment; etc”), from which Thai สำนอง was derived.

Compare Modern Khmer ស្នង (snɑɑng), សង (sɑɑng), សំណង (sɑmnɔɔng).

สนอง • (sà-nɔ̌ɔng) (abstract noun การสนอง)

1. to act, do, or happen in return, in consequence, or in opposition, such as to react, to counteract, to respond, to answer, to reply, to repay, to retribute, to requite, etc.
   • Psalm 35:12, KJV:

     เขาสนองข้าพระองค์โดยทำชั่วตอบความดี จิตใจของข้าพระองค์ก็ตรมตรอม

     kǎo sà-nɔ̌ɔng kâa-prá-ong dooi tam chûua dtɔ̀ɔp kwaam-dii jìt-jai kɔ̌ɔng kâa-prá-ong gɔ̂ɔ dtrom-dtrɔɔm

     They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.

   • Job 21:31, KJV:

     ผู้ใดสนองเขาในสิ่งที่เขาได้กระทำ

     pûu-dai sà-nɔ̌ɔng kǎo nai sìng tîi kǎo dâai grà-tam

     who shall repay him what he hath done?

2. (of a demand, desire, purpose, etc) to fulfill; to meet; to serve.
   • Galatians 5:16, KJV:

     ท่านจะไม่สนองความต้องการของเนื้อหนัง

     tân jà mâi sà-nɔ̌ɔng kwaam-dtɔ̂ng-gaan kɔ̌ɔng nʉ́ʉa-nǎng

     ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
