Etymology 1
From Sanskrit अशोक (aśoka, literally “sorrowless”), from अ (a, “without”) + शोक (śoka, “sorrow”), equivalent to Thai อ (à) + โศก (sòok). Compare Pali asoka.

Etymology 2
From clipping of อโศกมนตรี, the title of a Thai nobleman who owned the land which would become the location of the place.[1]
