Derived from Pali sobhiṇī (“beautiful woman”). Being a clipping of นครโสเภณี, from Pali nagarasobhiṇī (literally “beautiful woman of the city”). Cognate with Lao ໂສເພນີ (sō phē nī), Khmer សោភិនី (saophinii).
