Etymology
From ไม่ (mâi, “not”) + เป็น (bpen, “be”) + ไร (rai, “anything”). Compare Isan บ่เป็นหยัง, Lao ບໍ່ເປັນຫຍັງ (bǭ pen nyang), Northern Thai ᨷᩴ᩵ᨸᩮ᩠ᨶᩉ᩠ᨿᩢᨦ (bɔɔ² pen¹ ɲaŋ¹) or ᨷᩴ᩵ᨸᩮ᩠ᨶᩈᩢ᩠ᨦ (bɔɔ² pen¹ saŋ¹), Khün ᨷᩢᨸᩮ᩠ᨶᩈᩢ᩠ᨦ, Lü ᦢᧁᧈ ᦔᦲᧃ ᦉᧂ (ḃaw¹ ṗiin ṡang), Tai Dam ꪹꪚ꪿ꪱ ꪹꪜꪸꪙ ꪎꪰꪉ (báu pên săng), Shan ဢမ်ႇပဵၼ်သင် (ʼàm pǎen sǎng), Tai Nüa ᥕᥒᥙᥥᥢᥔᥒᥴ (yángpensang).
