From Proto-Karen *kaᴮ (“chin; jaw”). Cognate with Eastern Pwo ခး (khá), Western Pwo ခၪ, Western Kayah ꤋꤢꤧ꤬ (hkàe), Pa'o Karen ကာႏ.
