Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(m/b)rəw (grain; seed; lineage) (STEDT), whence Old Chinese (OC *mɯd, “thing, matter, substance”); see there for more cognates. That said, the phonetics of the aforementioned Chinese comparandum make comparison tenuous; a much closer cognate is (OC *mrew, “seedling”).
