Etymology 1
From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *hya¹ (“swidden, field (mountain)”), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-ya (“swidden”); cognate with Jingpho [script needed] (yi, “field”) (STEDT). Despite superficial similarities to Tibetan ལ (la, “hillside, mountain pass”) and modern Chinese 野 (yě, “open country, field, wilderness, countryside area”), the Tibetan and Chinese terms are likely not related.
