Etymology

Apparently from လွတ် (lwat, “be free from”) +‎ လပ် (lap, “be missing”), though the second component has been suggested to be an assimilation of ရပ် (rap, “to stand”), which is semantically more convincing; compare Chinese 獨立／独立 (dúlì, “independence”), whose second character is cognate with ရပ် (rap).
