STEDT derives the "gather in" sense from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *zim (“to collect, gather”), comparing Jingpho sím (“to store up, put away”), and the "withdraw" sense from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *sjim (“to sweep”), whence perhaps Old Chinese 侵 (OC *sʰim, “to gradually go in, invade”). MED groups all senses together, as there appears to be significant semantic conflation.
