From Proto-Mon-Khmer *(b)ruun (“intestinal worm”) (Shorto 2006). Cognate with Vietnamese giun, trùn.

Sakamoto (2015) derives this word, alongside regular ភ្រូណ (phruun) ~ ភ្រូណា (phruunaa, “embryo”), from Sanskrit भ्रूण (bhrūṇa, “embryo”).
