From Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (to grind). Cognate with Old Armenian աղամ (ałam, grind, pound), Hindi आटा (āṭā, flour), Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 (aṣ̌a, ground), Persian آرد (ârd, flour).[1]
