Ancient Greek

From Proto-Hellenic *ōyyón, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm (“egg”), argued to have been a derivative of *h₂éwis (“bird”), whence also ᾱ̓ετός (āetós, “eagle”) and οἰωνός (oiōnós, “bird of prey”). Cognates include Latin ōvum, Persian (xâye) and Old English ǣġ (English egg).

ᾠόν • (ōión) n (genitive ᾠοῦ); second declension

Along with πτερόν (pterón), λουτρόν (loutrón) and ζυγόν (zugón), this is one of the very few neuter nouns that does not have a recessive accent.
