Etymology
From Proto-Hellenic *lewotrón, whence also Mycenaean Greek 𐀩𐀺𐀵𐀫 (re-wo-to-ro /lewotrón/), from Proto-Indo-European *léwh₃trom (“that which is used for washing”), from *lewh₃- (“to wash, bathe”); see there for further cognates. Equivalent to λούω (loúō) + -τρον (-tron).
Noun
λουτρόν • (loutrón) n (genitive λουτροῦ); second declension
Usage notes
- Along with πτερόν (pterón), ᾠόν (ōión) and ζυγόν (zugón), this is one of the very few neuter nouns that does not have a recessive accent.
